Costa Branco Work in progress Short Abstract: This preliminary work focuses on the application of HTS tapes on the rotor of induction machines (HTS-ISM). To evaluate the electromagnetic and mechanical performance of HTS tapes in this type of machines, a magnetic circuit prototype to mimic the operating conditions of the HTS-ISM is in development. AC loss measurements in 1G BSCCO and 2G YBCO have been done. For tapes characterization, a cost-effective setup was implemented to test each tape performance under self-field and applied magnetic field conditions. Special focus is given to the start-up and synchronous to slip mode transients (respectively, high frequency induced currents and losses behaviour). This…

Research topic: Electrical MachineCryogenic Experimental Assessment of Cryogenic Cooling Impact on Induction Motors Luís F. D. Bucho; João F. P. Fernandes; Marco Biasion; Silvio Vaschetto; Andrea Cavagnino;Journal: IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion (2022)(Check this article) Short Abstract: In this work, an experimental assessment of the influence of cryogenic cooling in a conventional induction motor is presented. The performance of a fractional kilowatt induction motor is evaluated when submerged in liquid nitrogen. Using the single-phase equivalent electric circuit, the influence of the temperature and skin-effect is analyzed in the variation of the machine’s parameters, under ambient and cryogenic conditions. Also, the variation of the iron core and mechanical losses are evaluated. An analytical methodology is proposed to estimate the change of motor performance under cryogenic conditions. The experimental tests in cryogenic conditions show the…

Research topic: Electrical Machine DesignCobalt-Iron Optimal Design of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Cobalt Iron Core Pedro P. C. Bhagubai, Luís F. D. Bucho, João F. P. Fernandes and P. J. Costa BrancoJournal: Energies (2022)(Check this article) Short Abstract: The use of a cobalt-iron (VaCoFe) core is investigated as an alternative to silicon-iron (FeSi) in the design of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM). Considering VaCoFe and FeSi cores, a spoke-type IPMSM geometry is optimized for a torque range up to 40 N·m, providing a general comparative analysis between materials. This is done considering the application of a four-motor competition vehicle’s powertrain. VaCoFe allows an estimated increase of up to 64% in torque for the same efficiency level, or up to 5% in efficiency for the same torque. Additional…

5th Meeting of the Young Researchers of LAETA (2022)

Events
Event 5th Meeting of the Young Researchers of LAETA Previous Next On May 5-6, 2022, our young researchers participated in the 5th Meeting of Young Researchers of LAETA, presenting their research works: Andrés Zúñiga; António Costa; Eduardo Sarquis; Francisco Silva; Inês Peixoto; Pedro Bhagubai. Design of a Superconducting Machine with CORC Windings for Aircraft Propulsion The main topic of this presentation was the variables and design constraints pertaining to the propulsion system requirements that are needed to be addressed before assessing the design of a superconducting machine. A more extensive review is here. A multi-objective optimization is performed to analyze the best geometries for specific power and efficiency. Equivalent Models for CORC and Bulks are to be used for fast computation and enough accuracy. This models are tested for several…

Research topic: Superconductors Optimization of the Guiding Stability of a Horizontal Axis HTS ZFC Radial Levitation Bearing A. J. Arsénio, F. F. da Silva, João F. P. Fernandes, Paulo J. Costa BrancoJournal: Actuators(Check this article) Short Abstract: This document presents a study on the optimization of the 3D geometry of a horizontal axis radial levitation bearing with zero-field cooled (ZFC) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) bulks in the stator, and radially magnetized permanent magnet (PM) rings in the rotor. The optimization of component dimensions and spacing to minimize the volume or cost concerning only the maximization of the levitation force was previously studied. The guidance force and guiding stability depend on the spacing between PM rings in the rotor and between the rings of HTS bulks in the stator. This new optimization…

Hamid Iftikhar, Eduardo A. Sarquis Filho, P. J. da Costa BrancoMDPI Energies (2021)(Check article) Short Abstract: In this paper, a comparative analysis is done using real field data and simulation to assess the PV power plant underperformance and indicates the most important predictive maintenances actions. Issues in the tracking systems, inverters and combiner boxes were reported. In addition, an analysis of the O&M power plant reports was performed and compared to the best global practices. In this case, the adoption of predictive maintenance and automated plant diagnosis at the strings level were recommended. Additional content:

J. da Costa BrancoElsevier Solar Energy (2021)(Check article) Short Abstract: This paper introduces a complete a simulation framework capable of reproduce mismatch conditions at the cell level, including failures. The results were validated experimentally for mismatch conditions due to shading but also due to failures. The simulation framework is more suitable to emulate small arrays with few strings, being a helpful tool for the study of failure impacts on PV strings.
